GIANNI
VERSACE One year after Gianni Versace's untimely death, two large shows in his honor are held in Como until October. One will be at Villa Olmo and the other at the Fondazione Ratti. The shows are intended to celebrate the genius of Versace the designer, who dressed innumerable Hollywood stars and international celebrities. |

The venue for
the two shows was not chosen by chance: although a native of Calabria, Versace was
enamored of Lake Como, where he maintained the splendid Villa delle Rondinelle at
Moltrasio. Of all the houses Versace owned, it is said that it was here that the designer
took refuge and entertained his guests. The lake gave him a sense of tranquillity which
allowed the inspiration for his creations to take hold and develop.Parties held at the luxurious villa on the lake were numerous, the guest lists stellar. It was no rare occurrence for local inhabitants to encounter stars the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Elton John, Madonna, Elisabeth Taylor or Lisa Marie Presley, all of whom were frequent guests. The Villa Olmo has taken over the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art's extraordinary exhibition dedicated to Versace, augmenting it by an additional 50 garments. The second exhibition, La Reinvenzione della Materia, or the Reinvention of Material,
is being hosted by the Fondazione Ratti and focuses on the more experimental and
extravagant aspects of the late designer's work, through an exploration of his textile
creations and experiments conducted on various materials which seemed, at times, to defy
nature (laser-etched rubber, for example).
