The Return of Fine Tailoring
The tailor is making a comeback, just when you thought nobody did that anymore.
Even the large department stores are offering tailoring services: nobody
is immune to the public's fashion sensibilities. Society is currently undergoing
social changes. To what extent the fashion industry and the direction of
fashion are affected is not yet clear. Today's youth, as in the 60's, are
the most influential indicators for stylists as it is they who buy into
trends and fancies. All of us are sensitive to dress, in how we represent
our selves through our style of dress, how we are perceived by others.
As evidenced by Oliviero Toscani's photo exhibition for Benetton a Pitti
Immagine-Firenze which was comprised of hundreds of photo-portraits of today's
youth, full of their personal fashion statements as spoken by their accessories,
hairstyles and glances. No one is free from belief in the old adage "clothes
make the man" and that they are somehow an expression of self.
Fashion
in the eye of the consumer has become increasingly theoretical, less regimented,
while the industry continues to consider their metier in anachronistic terms,
continuing to create fashions out of touch with present social changes,
and shows itself unable to compromise.
