The Breath of Spring:
exciting news from the past

There's a hint of the 80's in the air this spring: long-sleeved t-shirts which leave the shoulders bare and trousers with free-swinging slits.
And what else in is store?

Ferré has taken a decidedly African turn, featuring fringed, ethnic print dresses with a sublime touch of tribal elegance.

Ungaro goes Bohemian with a magnificent combination of vibrant colors and fabrics. The sensual, flowing designs are accompanied by must-have boleros of muslin and lace.

Max Mara proposes high-waisted pants closed with a row of tiny buttons down the legs. Khaki green dominates the trouser line, topped by classic military shirts with contrasting pockets.

Valentino loves to see his creations sparkle and
shine - literally! There are fabulous little mini-dresses adorned with black, turquoise and silver appliqués worn with innovative "bracelet bags" at the wrist.

Missoni has gone all out for "swing" this season, opting for geometrical patterns and strong colors.

Prada recalls the unique lines of the 50's, with a realignment of proportions and a jolt of color. Circular skirts (no poodles!) are paired with micro twin sets cropped just below the bust, while wide knitted
wasp-waisted belts cinch matching pencil skirts.

Tom Ford has led Gucci to explore - what else? -- the 80s. Angular shapes contrast wide, loose cargo pants in black, white and bright purple satin. Boned corset dresses of sheer black accentuate a curvy new silhouette, as do the stunning corsets worn over sheer tops.

Dolce & Gabbana are very familiar with the 1980's, as evidenced by references to both the Wall Street Yuppie (pin stripe and houndstooth) and the native American, to Madonna (tour T-shirts sprinkled with Swarovski) and biker leathers. Stretchy dresses and wide, jewel encrusted belts slung low over the hips will be a sure hit next season. D&G are also relying on the push-up bra, at a time when other designers are toying with a return to the
cone-shaped cup of the 50's.

Donatella Versace's collection was without a doubt the coolest and most outrageously fun of the entire 80's retrospective! From start to finish, it's a decadent demand for attention from the bright acid colors with broad, black leather belts to the patent lather pencil skirts and matching jackets.
