This 90's phenomenon presents all the characteristics of a social trend.
It's the dawning of the new millennium: magic, esotericism, chivalry and the
divine are all blended together, expressing a disquieting but luminous desire
for liberation. Beneath this cryptic trend which glorifies terror, beneath the
new sensation of time coming to an end, underlies an authentic need to break
loose from the past, in order to imagine a future which frightens us
nonetheless. An intimate tension, a visionary force is influencing fashion taste the world over. The taste for neo-gothic is sweeping the whole of Europe, America and Australia, and is nothing less than an institutionalized extension of the dark trend of the 80's. Remember the punk motto: "no future"? It is interesting to note that Vivienne Westwood, self- proclaimed creator of punk fashion, is still fashionable today, even though her style expresses emotional detachment while communicating joy and fun; her style has been (badly) copied by contemporary English designers, into something rather violent and dramatic. |
