MILAN: The Golden Triangle
| The high fashion shop windows in Milano are concentrated in the
streets of a conveniently central area beginning just 10 minutes from
Piazza della Scala and running along Via Montenapoleone, Via Sant'Andrea,
Via della Spiga.
The area can be reached easily by subway on the yellow, number 3 line, getting off at the Montenapoleone stop. Directly in front (Via Morone 8) you'll find the Poldi Pezzoli Museum, famous for its Pollaiolo portraits and an impressive collection of antique lace. Salvatore Ferragamo and Roman designer Valentino (men's and women's boutiques) welcome you at the very beginning, on the block between the cross-streets of Via Borgospesso and Via Santo Spirito. Passing Via del Gesù, you'll encounter two French fashion landmarks, Cartier and Louis Vuitton. Prada Uomo is situated on the corner of Montenapoleone and Via Bagutta. In the courtyard, you'll find Mila Shön and Versace Donna. On the left side of the street, there are the shoes of Fratelli
Rossetti and, on what was once the site of La Cantina Domicini,
Fausto Santini shoes. The Gianni Versace Boutique at No. 2 is spread over four floors: Ground floor - men's and women's accessories, 1st floor custom menswear, 2nd floor menswear, 3rd and 4th floors prêt-à-porter menswear.
Via Sant'Andrea Missoni Boutique catches our eye on the corner with Via Bagutta.
Via Della Spiga This street, closed to traffic, is the true mecca for window shoppers.
Beginning at the intersection with Sant'Andrea you'll first encounter
Borsalino. Along the opposite side of the street, turning back, you'll see Prada at No.3, and Bottega Veneta, leather and women's wear boutiques. Sharra Pagano, high-fashion/high-price costume jewelery, is at No.7. Erreuno is located at No.15, and at the intersection with Borgospesso,
Krizia. Be sure to appreciate the granite paving stones on Via Della Spiga. The historic tiles are unusually clean and shiny, having been restored one by one to their original luster by the Via Della Spiga Activists Association.
Two important addresses for the hungry and tired crowd: Antico Caffè Cova:a landmark café known for its fin-de-siècle décor and for its fine production of sweets. Their specialty: tiny, two-portion sublimely rich Sacher Torte. Located at the intersection of Montenapoleone and Sant'Andrea. Bice, Via Borgospesso 12, ph. 02-795528. |
