The Colors of the Next Century
By Patrizia Vavassori

Trends, counter-trends, styles to follow, designers to avoid...the ways of the world of fashion are always subject to interpretation and to be taken with a rather large grain of salt. The latest women's collection is looking good, the men's lines are looking good. But all in all, we take what we like and leave the rest to be washed away by the incoming tide. So don't distinguish a red Valentino from a creamy creation by Genny-- let's explore the character of the individual garment, as expressed through color.

Fashion consultants often advise wearing colors which contrast to, or perhaps even counteract, our state of mind. Dolce Vita, on the other hand, suggests you face the new millennium wearing colors which coincide with your own personal rhythms.

Black:

Alberrta FerrettiThe absence of light. In many cultures, black represents the funereal and all things obscure and evil. The ancient Egyptians, however, paired it with rebirth and resurrection. The fashion industry sees it in terms sensuality, sleek and seductive. If you're feeling like a rebirth worthy of an Egyptian pharaoh, or a fashion-world burst of sensuality, slip into your basic black!

Red:

Mariella BuraniThe primary color of the rainbow. It is said that red is the color first perceived by infants, a conjecture which would seem to be supported by the fact that in all the languages around the globe, read is the first color spontaneously named after black and white. Laura BiagiottiRed is quickest to attract our attention It has been demonstrated to trigger an accelerated heartbeat and stimulate adrenaline production. That blood is red gives the color a vital connotation in all the world's cultures. Red is the color of the heart, and of love; of dynamism and vitality; of passion and sensuality; of authority and pride.

Silver:

Krizia A gleaming and glittering twist on gray, silver is the complementary colour of gold. Catholics view the color in connection with a renunciation of "the mortal coil" to liberate the immortal soul. Much in the same line if thinking, the fashion world ( normally known more for its excesses!) has always used silver is the creation of sleek and spare evening gowns. Forego voluminous partywear? Hey, if the color fits....

Gold:

Giorgio Armani Highlighting glow, reflections of divine power, sun and energy. Legend says the regal Athena, daughter of Zeus, was clad in gold. Gold is the essence of the sun. It is the esoteric symbol for the conversion of the soul. For the Hindus, it is the symbol of immortality, light and truth. If you feel the illuminated by the glow of inner truth, light up your surroundings with an outfit worthy of a deity!

Beige:

MaxMaraEven though the warm tones those most often associated with self-confidence, in truth, beige best reflects the self-assuredness of the wearer. It is the color of the sands and the Northern regions, of cold and all of nature. Someone fond of wearing beige and brown tones only need watch out they're not overpowered by the sheer confidence or their clothes!
