For five days in April (13 - 18), Milano once again demonstrated its position as the world's design capital. The Salone Internazionale del Mobile, a furniture and decor trade fair, is a pivotal event for all those involved in what has became a sector of weighty economic importance in Italy.
As such, it attracts a great deal of international attention. Buyers and manufacturers from at least 140 countries joined magazine editors and decorators in search of the hippest new trends, high style and technological wonder - and perhaps in search of a little urban soul.
This year's fair proved exceptionally interesting. Three halls were given over to the home, kitchen and office respectively, while two extraordinary exhibitions were dedicated to the two unchallenged gurus of Italian design, Ettore Sottsass and Bruno Munari.
A total of 180 supporting events, "Fuori Salone", were also planned around the fair. The resulting affair was one electrifying marathon of activity uniting showrooms, art, fashion and design which lasted far into the night.
