Achille Castiglioni




A designer who relates to his designs as an artisan. For Castiglioni, the object is born of need, as a consequence of the function it is destined to serve.
Case in point, his "Posate Dry" tableware, created in 1982 for Alessi with the italian cuisine in mind. The typical Italian dish spaghetti, calls for a fork with four tines, whereas in many countries three-tined forks are used. Similarly, the capacity and shape of the spoon varies from country to country.
Italian designs favor a size and shape conducive to eating another traditional Italian favorite, minestrone and other soups. ("Oh, the tragic little spoons of Scandinavia,"says Castiglioni "they're positively incapable of holding onto the broth"!!!).
The MoMA in New York is hosting an exhibition through January 6,1998 entitled "Achille Castiglioni: design!" featuring, among other things, reconstructions of interiors designed by the architect between the 50's and 80's.
