Concept, organization and curation:
Patrizia Ledda & Maria Gallo of Map Design
This unusual exhibition is in fact
not as whimsical as it sounds. The project was realized by means
of a contribution made by the Progetto Giovani del Comune
di Milano, backed by the Milanese chapter of LILA (an
Italian anti-AIDS organization).

Where document cases, map cases, instrument cases and sample
cases have always been, there are now also condom cases. And
why not? On the eve of the new millennium, the wonderful world
of indispensable extras was found lacking. Lovers in the age
of "safe sex" realized they had nowhere to carry what has become
a Saturday night essential (and everyone knows you can't carry
them around in your wallet...).

Set design in Milan
39 designers have risen to meet
the call and the current the exhibition presents the best efforts
made by this group of designers both young and less so, Italian
and no.
On display are prototypes designed and manufactured with not
a little courage, wisdom and sense of humor. The collection
represents a gallery of seemingly futuristic articles which
will hopefully serve to make the use (and possession!) of condoms
less traumatic and less awkward.

Dennis Santachiara's project: "L'uccellino"
The condom case demonstrates responsibility
with a dose of imagination toward the issues of sex, enjoyment,
health risks and personal safety.
A book has been compiled by the curators of the exhibition (Costa
e Nolan / Phoenix, publishers) to mark the occasion, featuring
photographs of the pieces on display accompanied by the designs
and commentary. The book also includes stories and poetry written
by contemporary Italian authors as well as interviews with critics
on design, and academics on the subject of modern youth culture
(incl. Cristina Morozzi, Carlo Branzaglia, Iain Chambers).
