This is a small area in northeastern Italy bordered by Austria, Slovenia,
the Adriatic Sea and Veneto whose winemaking tradition dates back to antiquity.
The regional capital is Trieste, and other provinces in the region are Gorizia,
Pordenone, Udine. Particularly renowned in the world of wines are the region's white wines, such as the Chardonnay, Pinot bianco, Pinot grigio, Sauvignon and the Tocai of Friuli which bear one of the regions two D.O.C. denominations: Collio and Colli Orientali. Notable red wines from the area include Merlot, Cabernet and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. |
