The Mountain Wines of the Valtellina Valley

A large and historical agricultural spread in the valley, whose grapes grow miraculously on the mountain slopes. Wines of note include the full-bodied 1989 Sassella Vigna Regina , Sassella Rocce Rosse Riserva 1988 and the fruity red 1994 Stella Retica. La Casa Vinicola Triacca (via Nazionale 121, Tirano, ph. 0342-701352) Founded 100 years ago, was one of the valley's first vineyards to organize adventurous wine expeditions across the Alps, bringing their wares to the Swiss market. Its prestigious wines are aged in the cellars of the antique Dominican monastery, the Monastero la Gatta, well-maintained by the vineyard.
