Once known here as "aperitivi americani", the aperitif serves to stimulate the appetite. They are general somewhat bitter and contain a relatively low percentage of alcohol. The aperitivo is principally an icebreaker, an opportunity to spend time with friends in a most pleasant and economical way -- usually accompanied by a variety of snacks, the aperitif is considerably less expensive than a full dinner and just as fun! CAMPARIInvented at the Camparino, still found in Milano's Piazza del Duomo, Campari has been enjoyed for over a century. In 1893, the electric tram was inaugurated in Milano. On the day it was launched, transit authorities christened it with drinks all-round of Campari's house bitters. Today, it is produced commercially and can be found anywhere in the world. It provides the base for many familiar cocktails, such as the Negroni. APEROLA low-alcohol aperitif (11°), made from an infusion of various plants (rhubarb root, gentian, china bark, bitter orange). Aperol is best-loved for its unmistakable, delicate aroma, both bitter and sweet. It is characterized by a luminous color somewhere between deep orange and cinnabar. Served over ice, straight or with a splash of soda. |
