There's more legend than ice cubes to a martini cocktail. The legendary J.D.Rockefeller once remarked to friends: "Before choosing your hotel, order a martini cocktail at the bar. Then, you'll know if the hotel is good enough for you..." Drinker of legend Ernest Hemingway often brought a martini into his conversations, as well as to his lips: "'I'd like an olive in my martini', I said to the barman" he writes in "The Sun Also Rises". And what about the unmistakeable Humphrey Bogart? With a squint in his eyes and cigarette dangling between his lips: "I never should have switched from scotch to martinis." The sight of a martini glass' distinctive form is a familiar one to fans of the Silver Screen. Ronald Reagan consoled a desolate Bette Davis with 3 martinis in "Dark Victory" (1939). Davis again (a devotée) with glass in hand in "All About Eve" (1950). Then there's a pomaded David Niven furtively downing a martini in "My Man Godfrey" (1957). In "An Affair To Remember", the great Alfred Hitchcock put a martini with olives in the hands of Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. The same drink gives Frank Sinatra and David Wayne a memorable hangover in "The Tender Trap"(1955). And everybody knows James Bond likes his martinis "very, very dry." The martini cocktail's clear and strong-willed simplicity is made possible by its two vigorous elements: gin for spirit and snap, White Martini for aroma and roundness. Leaving gin to our European cousins, we will honor the Italian liquor that gave martinis their name, by proposing five other classic Martini cocktails. Enjoy! |
